A lot of people start climbing thinking it’s mostly about arm strength, but beginners usually realise pretty quickly there’s a lot more technique involved than expected. Some common things newer climbers seem to struggle with at the start:
Climbing definitely seems to be one of those sports where technique matters far more than people expect before starting. What beginner mistake caused you the most trouble at the start?
- Using too much arm strength
Probably the biggest one. Many beginners try to pull themselves up every route using their arms only, which gets exhausting very quickly. More experienced climbers usually rely much more on foot placement and body positioning.
- Ignoring footwork
New climbers often focus only on handholds while barely thinking about their feet. But good footwork makes a huge difference in climbing efficiency and balance. Sometimes a route becomes much easier just by changing foot placement slightly.
- Climbing too fast
A lot of beginners rush routes and burn energy quickly. More experienced climbers often move slower and more controlled, especially on difficult sections.
- Overgripping holds
People new to climbing tend to squeeze holds far harder than necessary. That usually leads to tired forearms surprisingly quickly. Relaxing grip strength a bit helps more than many expect.
- Avoiding easier routes
Some beginners immediately want to try difficult climbs and get frustrated. Most climbers seem to improve faster by spending time on easier routes first and building technique naturally.
- Not resting enough between climbs
Grip fatigue builds up quickly, especially for beginners. A short rest between attempts can make a massive difference in performance.
- Looking only at the next hold
More experienced climbers usually plan several moves ahead instead of reacting one hold at a time. Route reading becomes a big part of climbing over time.
